Get Top Translators Using These 6 Questions
In the last issue of "Translation Alert" we notified you of four
ways you can avoid translation mistakes. One of the best ways to ensure a mistake-free
translation project is to ask the right questions of your translator from the
very first meeting.
When you sit down with prospective translators, here
are six questions to ask before trusting him - or her - with your project:
Can
I see samples? When viewing the samples, try not to be too concerned with
the format. For instance, if you're translating a sales letter, still look at
the translator's brochure samples. It's the content that matters. Another important
point: The translator should show you the project both before and after translation.
It would be nice to know the results of the marketing project as a result of the
translation, but that information isn't always readily available to the translator
so don't hold that against the translator if he or she can't provide that for
you.
Are you a native speaker? This is one of the most important
questions you can ask. Frankly there are some many intricacies in a language that
it would be extremely difficult to trust a person who isn't a native speaker of
the langue you would like your marketing communications translated into with your
project.
Who have you worked with in the past? Consider getting
a client list and contacting a few of the translator's previous clients to find
out what he or she is like to work with. Either an e-mail address or a telephone
number should be provided to you for by the translator for at least three contacts.
How do you charge or What are your terms? That seems simple
enough, but actually you'll want to have an in-depth description of how the translator
charges. Does he want all of his fee up front or just half, or maybe a third?
Not only get a verbal agreement from the translator, but be sure to get his or
her terms in writing as well.
What information do you need to complete
this project? This is a good gauge of the translator's professionalism.
A pro will ask for the completed project in your native language. (For instance
the brochure, letter or other marketing piece you'd like translated.) A pro will
also take things a step further and ask for any previous pieces you've produced,
along with your company's contact information. The translator should also have
a list of questions about your target audience and what you'd like to get out
of this translation effort.
What are your time requirements? Don't
expect an answer to this question right away, but it's always smart to ask up
front. The reason why you may not get a response is that the translator may have
to gauge your projects against the others he or she is already handling. You should
expect a prompt response, though, of no more than two business days. Anything
more and you're not dealing with a pro - move on to your next candidate.
By
using this six-question list you'll find the best translator and have a relatively
smooth experience translating your existing marketing materials into other languages
- opening up even more opportunities to increase revenue.
